Programme of Events for 2017 / 2018 to be announced shortly

Three dates to note for now:

Tuesday 3rd October, 2017

Presidential Address

Tuesday 31st October, 2017

Textile Institute Yorkshire: PP Townend Memorial Lecture. Tony Hodges
‘Weaving, Washing and Wealth-making’
In this entertaining talk, Tony Hodges, a successful Yorkshire businessman, will relate how he stumbled across simple life changing (for him) lessons while working for the Wool Industry Training Board in the 1970s. When he started his own company in 1996, these lessons became a key ingredient in its growth. Today he has an 80 person team with offices in the U.S., Australia and the UK working for the world’s largest companies. He will talk about how some of those early lessons have enabled his firm to become a market leader in communicating complex messages to 22m people around the globe. He will include clips from videos he has produced during his career featuring the Henry Wheatley mill at Mirfield, John McEnroe and putting ‘man into space’. The key message in his talk will be that none of us should ever stop learning but always be looking for new opportunities to express our creativity.

5th December 2017

Claire Wellesley-Smith
Worn Stories: Material and Memory in Bradford.
Worn Stories is a two year project exploring the heritage of textile reuse and second hand textiles in Bradford from 1880 to the present day. It is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and is based at Hive, a local community arts charity. This talk will explore the work of this community-based research and engagement project where diverse groups from across the city are developing research skills and learning about heritage through hands-on textile activities. Claire Wellesley-Smith is an artist, writer and researcher based in Bradford and is co-ordinating the Worn Stories Project.

9th January 2018

Vanessa Yoxall
Women in Textiles.
Vanessa will be discussing women’s historical roles in the Textile industry. She will talk about her own experiences as a trainee colourist and screen printer at A W Hainsworth and Sons in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire. She will propose that more women should aim for job roles in the Textile industry that have not traditionally been a woman’s domain.

6th February 2018

Andrea Wilde
Hield Brothers: History and Vision.
Following her very interesting talk last year about her own creative weaving practice Andrea is going to return to tell us about Hield Brothers, the Bradford- based company for whom she now works as an in-house designer. She will discuss how the family who took over the company in the 1980s repositioned the firm and rebranded it for a new market.

*Dates and times will be sent out to the membership when these have been finalised.
